Middlebury: The Death of the American Dream?

On May 10, 2022, the Alexander Hamilton Forum at Middlebury College will be hosting AEI scholar Michael Strain, who will argue that populism has infused an unwarranted and debilitating pessimism into national economic discourse.

Michael Strain is the Director of Economic Policy Studies, and the Arthur F. Burns Scholar in Political Economy at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI). Dr. Strain is the author of The American Dream Is Not Dead: (But Populism Could Kill It) (Templeton Press, 2020) and the editor or coeditor of three books: What Has Happened to the American Working Class Since the Great Recession? (American Academy of Political and Social Science, 2021), The US Labor Market: Questions and Challenges for Public Policy (AEI Press, 2016), and Economic Freedom and Human Flourishing: Perspectives from Political Philosophy (AEI Press, 2016). He also writes frequently for popular audiences, and his essays and op-eds have been published by The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, The Atlantic, National Review, and The Weekly Standard, among others. He is a columnist for Bloomberg Opinion.

The Alexander Hamilton Forum at Middlebury College aims to foster thoughtful engagement with the ideas that have informed the creation and development of the American polity. The Forum promotes the study of the American political thought and founding principles; their relationship to American institutions, statesmanship, public law, political economy, and grand strategy; and their place in the history of western political philosophy. It seeks to offer students an opportunity to think critically about the relevance of political and constitutional theory to a range of contemporary debates in American public life.
