On this day – Louisiana becomes our 18th State

April 30, 2022

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every year that begins at 12:00 am on day 30 of April, repeating indefinitely

On April 30, 1812, Louisiana was admitted to the United States as our 18th state.

Did you know? Perhaps unsurprisingly, Louisiana is the birthplace of jazz. The port city of New Orleans was the perfect melting pot for jazz’s development, as the genre borrows elements of both African and European musical traditions. Jazz developed in the city during the late 1800s and by the 1920s had become popular across the United States (hence the “Jazz Age”). 🎷 🥁 🎼

What’s in a name? A reflection of its French roots, Louisiana is named after King Louis XIV of France.
