On July 11, 1960, Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird was first published. Tackling themes of right and wrong, racism, and justice through the eyes of the child main character, Scout. ⚖️ ⚖️ ⚖️ The novel was an immediate bestseller. It was soon made into an Oscar-winning movie in 1962 and is still widely-read in American middle and high schools today.

Did you know? Many of the details of To Kill a Mockingbird had origins in the events of Harper Lee’s own childhood in 1930s Alabama. She and Gregory Peck (who famously played Atticus Finch in the movie adaptation) remained lifelong friends.
