On January 8, 1815, the Battle of New Orleans took place in Louisiana. The final major battle of the War of 1812, the event was noteworthy for a few interesting reasons:
1. The war was already over! Peace had been declared two weeks prior to the battle, but the slow flow of news in 1815 meant that neither side (nor Congress for that matter) was aware that the war was over.
2. The American troops were a varied group of men from all backgrounds, including frontiersmen, Native Americans, Free Men of Color, local aristocrats, and (perhaps most surprisingly) pirates! Though they were outnumbered, this varied group of men band together to soundly beat their British opponents.
3. The Battle of New Orleans launched future-president Andrew Jackson onto the national political stage. His swift actions in New Orleans cemented him as a leader in the American political mind.
