An event every year that begins at 12:00 am on day 21 of January, repeating indefinitely

On January 21, 1738, Revolutionary War hero Ethan Allen was born in Litchfield, Connecticut. Most famously, he led the Green Mountain Boys, a band of New Hampshire men, in capturing Fort Ticonderoga. He was also key in founding the independent (!) Republic of Vermont.

Did you know? Allen rallied hard for Vermont’s independence from neighboring states, particularly against New York. In fact, the Green Mountain Boys were originally organized to drive New Yorkers out of the New Hampshire Grants (present day Vermont). When the young United States refused to grant Vermont statehood, Allen began negotiations to make Vermont a territory of Canada. Sadly for Allen, he would never see Vermont become a state, dying two years prior.
