On this day – Iowa became our 28th State

December 28

On December 28, 1845, Iowa was admitted to the Union as our 28th state. Iowa is known for its rich farmland, and deservedly so – it is the top producer in the country of corn, pork, and eggs.

Did you know? During the Civil War, Iowa sent a larger percentage of men to serve the Union than any other state.

What’s in a name? “Iowa” is believed to have been derived from the name of the local Ioway tribe.
