How Lincoln Moved the Nation: A Virtual Jeffersonian Seminar
January 29, 2022
The seminar will provide Bradley and JMC Fellows the opportunity to meet like-minded scholars while discussing an important topic in American political thought.
We will be joined by Dr. Diana Schaub, Professor of Political Science at Loyola University Maryland, Visiting Professor in the Government Department at Harvard University, and a Visiting Scholar at the American Enterprise Institute. Professor Schaub will be discussing her newly published work on Lincoln, His Greatest Speeches: How Lincoln Moved the Nation. In this book, she examines three crucial speeches–the Lyceum Address, the Gettysburg Address, and the Second Inaugural–in order to reveal Lincoln’s considered view of American purpose and identity. Professor Schaub will guide seminar participants through Lincoln’s rhetorical strategies and relevant historical context to comment on the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, and the history of slavery in the United States.
