Harriet Tubman Day

March 10, 2023

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every year that begins at 12:00 am on day 10 of March, repeating indefinitely

On this day in 1913, American abolitionist and leading conductor in the Underground Railroad Harriet Tubman died in Auburn, New York. An escaped slave herself, Tubman took great personal risks to lead at least 70 slaves out of the South to freedom – she never lost a passenger.

Did you know? Aside from her work as a conductor, Tubman was a spy for the Union Army. She headed a network of scouts, providing the army with information on Confederate supply routes and positions. During this time, she oversaw a military raid, making her the first and only woman to organize a military operation during the Civil War.

In some states, today is honored as Harriet Tubman Day.
