Happy National Peanut Butter Day!

January 24, 2022

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every year that begins at 12:00 am on day 24 of January, repeating indefinitely

Happy National Peanut Butter Day! This uniquely American treat was first patented in the late 1800s, as Canadian Marcellus Gilmore Edson and American John Harvey Kellogg experimented with creating pastes out of roasted and raw peanuts. Kellogg’s easily digested paste was used as a healthy food for sanitarium patients.

As a result of meat-rationing during the World Wars, Americans turned to peanut butter as a protein substitute and were hooked.

Did you know? Though peanut butter is a staple in American homes, abroad it is far less popular – the United States consumes more peanut butter than any other country.

Peanuts are native to the Western Hemisphere and most likely originated in South America. The Inca were the very first to grind roasted peanuts into a paste.

Fresh Roasted (Peanuts), John Haberle, 1887
