Did you know? Cookies in colonial America were made from simple ingredients like sugar and butter. These butter cookies were close relatives of teacakes and shortbread of the Old World. With progress in shipping and transportation, however, cookie varieties eventually exploded – in modern times we enjoy cookies made with coconut, cinnamon, and (of course) chocolate. 🥥🍫🥥
Why do Americans call cookies “cookies” when the English prefer “biscuits” or “cakes?” Early Dutch immigrants used the word “koekje”, a diminutive of the Dutch word for cake (koek). The name was soon adopted into American English.
