On this day – Georgia became our 4th State

January 2, 2023

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every year that begins at 12:00 am on day 2 of January, repeating indefinitely

On January 2, 1788, Georgia ratified the Constitution, making it our 4th state. It’s the largest state east of the Mississippi River and is famous for its peaches, pecans, and peanuts.

Did you know? Georgia was originally chartered as a felon colony – the colony’s founder, James Oglethorpe, wanted English debtors to find a fresh start in the colony rather than being sent to debtors’ prison.

What’s in a name? Georgia is named after King George II, who approved the colony’s charter.
