On February 7, 1867, American author Laura Ingalls Wilder was born in Pepin County, Wisconsin. Wilder is best-known for her Little House book series, which was based upon her own pioneer childhood in the American Midwest. In fact, Pepin County was the setting of the first book in the series, Little House in the Big Woods. In the 1970s, the books were adapted into a popular television series.

Did you know? Surprisingly, Wilder’s first manuscript was rejected by every publisher she approached. She did not meet with publishing success until 1932 at age 65.
