On February 19, 1942, Executive Order 9066 was signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, allowing the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II.

The order disrupted the lives of tens of thousands of Japanese Americans, who were relocated to internment camps (most in remote areas of the West). Though many of the interned were U.S. citizens, they lost their liberty and were unable to appeal the legality of the government’s actions.

Did you know? Despite Executive Order 9066, some 30,000 Japanese American men served their country with distinction during the war.

In the 1980s, the president issued a public apology on behalf of the U.S. government and authorized reparations to those affected.
