On February 18, 1735, the first opera in America was performed in Charleston, South Carolina. So what was it? Flora, or Hob in the Well, a ballad opera. Ballad operas were a fairly new genre at the time and featured farce and popular songs with lyrics changed to fit the story. 🎼 🎠🎟
