Boston Massacre occurs on King Street in Boston
An event every year that begins at 12:00 am on day 5 of March, repeating indefinitely
On this day in 1770, the Boston Massacre occurred on King Street in Boston, Massachusetts as colonists rioted and British troops panicked, opening fire and killing 5 men. The incident fueled increasing anti-British sentiment as the colonies approached the Revolution.
Did you know? Though labeled a “massacre”, the British troops had been provoked by the colonists, who had begun attacking with clubs. Propaganda was spread throughout the colonies painting the troops as unprovoked murderers. Future president John Adams was so convinced of the British soldiers’ innocence however, that he represented them in court (and secured acquittal for seven of his nine defendants.)
