On August 1, 1916, Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park was established on the island of Hawaiʻi in Hawaii. The park encompasses two extremely active volcanoes – Kīlauea and Mauna Loa – and visitors can view live volcanic spurts and lava flows. Did you know? Aside from its status as a national park, the area is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site as well as an International Biosphere Reserve.
And for good reason! Amazingly, the Hawaiian Islands are the most geographically isolated island group on Earth. This isolated biological environment has created flora and fauna found nowhere else and such biological isolation isn’t even found on the Galapagos Islands.
