April 15

On April 15, 1912, the Titanic sank in the North Atlantic Ocean around 2:00 AM on its maiden voyage from Southampton, England to New York City. The ship, though praised for its luxury and unsinkability, was unable to withstand the trauma of hitting an iceberg.

Of the Titanic’s 2,240 passengers, only 706 survived, with third class passengers in steerage (most of whom were immigrating to America) faring the worst. The immense loss of life is attributed to a negligent lack of lifeboats and design flaws in the ship itself.

The tragedy of Titanic lives on in the popular imagination to this day, in part because of the extraordinary acts of both cowardice and bravery witnessed that night.

Did you know? The Titanic’s wreckage wasn’t discovered until 1985, 73 years after the disaster.
