On this day – Alabama became our 22nd State

December 14, 2023

On December 14, 1819, Alabama was admitted to the Union as our 22nd state. The state has a long and varied history. Two Revolutionary War battles occurred there, though the area wasn’t acquired by the U.S. government until the Louisiana Purchase.

Did you know? During the Civil War, Alabama was one of the first states to join the Confederacy. Later, in the 1960s, it was a center of activity for the Civil Rights Movement. It was in Montgomery that Rosa Parks refused to give up her bus seat and Monroeville where Harper Lee was inspired to write To Kill a Mockingbird.

What’s in a name? “Alabama” is derived from the name of a local Native American tribe, the Alabama.
