|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every year that begins at 12:00 am on day 18 of February, repeating indefinitely

On this day in 1885, Mark Twain’s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn was first published in the United States. The book, still widely-read for its portrayal of race relations, focuses on the relationship between a young boy, Huckleberry Finn, and an escaped slave, Jim. Though a sequel to The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, it far surpassed its predecessor in depth and popularity.

Did you know? Huckleberry Finn was the first major novel written in the American vernacular. Twain’s choice to use true American dialect broke away from the convention of imitating the more proper grammar and dialogue of European literature.

Ernest Hemingway particularly admired the novel, stating “All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn… There was nothing before. There has been nothing as good since.”
