Abraham Lincoln assassinated by John Wilkes Booth

April 14, 2022

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every year that begins at 12:00 am on day 14 of April, repeating indefinitely

On this day in 1865, President Abraham Lincoln was tragically shot and mortally wounded in Ford’s Theatre while watching a performance of Our American Cousin. After being evaluated by doctors, he was taken across the street from the theater to William Petersen’s boarding house.

This painting, Lincoln Borne by Loving Hands, is the only known painting by an eyewitness to the assassination. Lincoln’s passage to the Petersen House was described by the artist as “the most tragic and impressive scene I have ever witnessed.” The president passed away the following morning at 7:22 a.m.
