|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every year that begins at 12:00 am on day 10 of April, repeating indefinitely

On this day in 1925, The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, was first published in New York City. The book, widely read by American high schoolers every year, is particularly associated with the Roaring ‘20s and explores materialism, identity, and habits of Jazz Age members of “the Lost Generation.”

Did you know? The Great Gatsby was a flop upon release, not gaining popularity until the 1940s when it was shipped to U.S. servicemen overseas. Fitzgerald, who died young in 1940, would never witness its success.
