The Jack Miller Center (JMC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing education in America’s founding principles and history. Through a vast network of scholars and educators, JMC fosters strong undergraduate teaching, serious scholarship, in-depth professional development for K-12 teachers, centers for civic thought on college campuses, and innovative teaching resources.

Position overview

The Communications Officer will play a key role in supporting JMC’s mission by developing and executing effective communications strategies to raise awareness of JMC’s initiatives, programs, and resources. The ideal candidate will be a creative, detail-oriented, and experienced communications professional with strong writing and editing skills. This position requires proficiency in both copywriting and copy editing, as well as the ability to collaborate with internal teams to create compelling content for diverse audiences.

Work Location: Bala Cynwyd, PA (a suburb just outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) or the Washington D.C. metro area. Remote work will be considered for exceptional candidates.

Reports to: Director of External Relations 

Key Responsibilities

  1. Content Creation: Write, edit, and proofread content for JMC’s website, social media platforms, email campaigns, newsletters, press releases, and other digital and print materials.
  2. Copywriting & Copy Editing: Ensure clear, concise, and accurate messaging across all communications. Edit and proofread materials for grammar, tone, and style, ensuring consistency with JMC’s voice and brand.
  3. Digital Media & Social Media: Create and manage engaging content across various digital platforms. Develop social media strategies, track engagement, and ensure alignment with JMC’s brand voice and objectives.
  4. Public Relations: Assist in the development of press materials, including press releases and fact sheets. Support media outreach and build relationships with key journalists and media outlets
  5. Brand Consistency: Ensure that all external and internal communications align with the JMC’s brand guidelines, values, and messaging strategy.
  6. Reporting & Analysis: Track and report on the effectiveness of communication campaigns and activities, including social media metrics and email open rates, to assess performance and inform future strategies.

Qualifications

  1. Commitment to the mission of the Jack Miller Center.
  2. 2+ years of professional experience in communications, public relations, or a related field.
  3. Demonstrated experience in copywriting, copy editing, and content creation for diverse platforms.
  4. Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills, with attention to detail.
  5. Proficiency in social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc.) and content management systems (WordPress or similar).
  6. Knowledge of AP Style and best practices for digital communication.
  7. Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  8. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Bachelor’s degree in communications, English, Journalism, Marketing, or a related field.
  2. Experience working in the nonprofit sector or higher education.
  3. Experience developing and executing digital media strategies across platforms, including social media, websites, and digital ads. Strong understanding of digital trends and audience analytics to optimize performance.
  4. Proficient in creating and editing engaging video content using tools like Adobe Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro for marketing, social media, and brand promotion.
  5. Familiarity with email marketing platforms (e.g., Mailchimp, Constant Contact).
  6. Basic graphic design skills or experience with design tools (e.g., Canva, Adobe Creative Suite) is a plus.
  7. Knowledge or interest in American history, political philosophy, or civic education.
