About the American Political Tradition Project:
Through the American Political Tradition project, we are building the academic talent pipeline of scholars who teach the history, documents, and ideals that unite us as Americans. The Jack Miller Center plays a key role in identifying, training, and supporting dedicated scholars throughout their careers. Over the past 20 years, this project has transformed American Political Thought from a struggling subfield into one of the most thriving disciplines in political science by investing in talented scholars, rigorous academic research, and campus programs for student engagement. Generally, we work with scholars in political science, political theory, American political development, history, philosophy, and related disciplines.
Our work
We are building talent pipelines for scholars who teach the American political tradition, creating a leadership support infrastructure for emerging schools of civic thought in public universities, empowering K-12 social studies teachers through innovative professional development and graduate education, and forging coalitions of civics-focused organizations and funders to galvanize an enduring civic education movement.
Position overview
The Academic Programs Associate is an integral member of the Jack Miller Center’s American Political Tradition Project, responsible for maintaining JMC’s network of academic contacts and administering JMC academic programming in higher education.
Work Location: Bala Cynwyd, PA, a suburb just outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The candidate will be expected to relocate to within commuting distance of Bala Cynwyd.
Job duties
- Assist in program design and on-site participation for academic seminars and conferences, as well as their planning and execution.
- Facilitate networking (i.e., make conversation, discuss the participants’ academic work, and introduce them to each other).
- Communicate with participants prior to and following an event to relay information and collect survey information. Network with JMC faculty partners and prospective faculty partners to maintain and grow the academic network.Draft and execute grant agreements, and collect grant reports from JMC partners.
- Maintain database of JMC programs, awards, events, and academic contacts.

Required:
- Commitment to the mission of the Jack Miller Center.
- Ability to travel (up to 10-15%).
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Self-motivated; ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Collaborative team-player with the ability to successfully engage with colleagues across the organization.
- Ability to interact professionally with professors, donors, and other individuals involved in our efforts.
- Flexibility and adaptability to changing work environments.
Desirable:
- Academic background in political science, American political development, political theory, philosophy, classics, or a related discipline
- Prior experience in a field related to the mission and operation of the Jack Miller Center.
- The ideal candidate would be able to grow into a role where he or she is developing and executing programming independently.
