Apply Now: Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Institute of American Civics, University of Tennessee, Knoxville

The Institute of American Civics, located within the Howard H. Baker, Jr. School of Public Policy and Public Affairs at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, invites recent Ph.D. (or relevant terminal degree) recipients in fields related to the Institute’s mission to apply for one-year appointment as a Postdoctoral Research Associate.

In addition to pursuing their own research agenda, postdoctoral researchers will be expected to assist in developing the Institute either through teaching (no more than one course per semester) or comparable administrative work.

The appointment may be extended up to two additional years at the discretion of the Executive Director of the Institute. Postdoctoral Researchers are expected be in-residence in Knoxville and demonstrate that they will be able to fulfill in-person responsibilities and participate in the Institute’s activities.

The Institute is a natural extension of the work the Howard H. Baker Jr. Center for Public Policy has done since its beginning, and the Institute is designed to build on the University of Tennessee’s capabilities in politics, economics, philosophy, American history and American government. The legislated mission of the Institute is to provide a comprehensive civic education for University of Tennessee undergraduates and the state at large, including America’s founding principles, the economic and political institutions that maintain American democracy and the basics of civic engagement.

The Institute seeks a solution-finder, someone who enthusiastically embraces opportunities to address novel situations through teamwork and collaboration. The successful candidate will be a hardworking and flexible professional, who thrives in developing out-of-the-box approaches to addressing new challenges. The search committee is looking for an achiever, someone who is searching for a chance to grow their skills and who is open to learning from others. The associate will be a critical thinker who exercises good judgment and who can be relied upon and trusted to provide sound counsel to colleagues and leadership, as well as a teammate who is dedicated to public service.

Qualifications:

Applications will be evaluated on the basis of the significance of the candidate’s research agenda, the quality of their past research, and their ability to contribute to the Institute’s development. The Institute is flexible regarding the applicant’s discipline, but the primary focus of the postdoctoral program will be political science, history, law, philosophy, and economics.

Application Instructions:

Applicants should submit the following:

  1. a letter of interest which describes the applicant’s research agenda;
  2. a scholarly paper;
