About the Jack Miller Center:
The Jack Miller Center (JMC) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to supporting professors and programs on college campuses that teach America’s founding principles, history, and documents. We currently have over 900 professors in our network who teach on over 300 college campuses. Each year, over 125,000 students take classes with our partner faculty.
The JMC is seeking a Director of Donor Relations to cultivate, solicit, and retain a portfolio of donors across the United States. This position is a major & mid-level gift officer position.
The Director of Donor Relations will report directly to JMC’s Executive Director of Philanthropy as part of a four-person donor development team. This position requires some travel (up to 25% of your time will be on the road meeting with donors and attending events). Occasional work on weekends and evenings is also required.
Your primary responsibility will be to secure funds to support the Jack Miller Center’s work by identifying, cultivating, and soliciting new major and mid-level donors, and by managing a group of donor accounts. As the Director of Donor Relations, you will help donors fulfill their passions and interests and make a huge positive impact through their gifts to the JMC.
The Director of Donor Relations will be based in the Jack Miller Center’s Bala Cynwyd (Philadelphia area) office.
As the Director of Donor Relations, you will:
- Identify, qualify, and manage a caseload of donors interested in higher education and America’s founding principles. While a portion of the Director of Donor Relations’ portfolio will be existing donors, this role will be primarily focused on new donor development.
- Create plans for engaging and soliciting each donor, and faithfully execute that plan in a timely manner.
- Coordinate and participate in donor acquisition opportunities and events, including networking events as well as JMC-sponsored donor events.
- Work with the program and communications departments to secure appropriate project information and create offers, proposals, and asks that resonate with donors to secure gifts for the JMC.
- Assist the President and Executive Director of Philanthropy in working with the board of directors to identify and cultivate new major donor prospect.
- Perform other donor development activities as may be required.
Position Goals and Objectives:
As the Director of Donor Relations, your performance will be measured by:
- Ability to identify and qualify new major and mid-level donors with interest in the JMC’s work.
- Ability to create and initiate personal contact and ask plans that take into account donors’ interests, motivations, giving patters, and ask preferences, and to do so in a timely and cost-effective manner.
- Ability to successfully solicit gifts and to retain and upgrade assigned donor accounts.
- Ability to write effective donor offers, proposals, and asks.
- Ability to manage projects and meet deadlines while adhering to the policies of the organization, get along with peers and management, maintain a positive and constructive attitude, and protect the mission, goals, and values of the Jack Miller Center.
The successful candidate will be passionate about America’s founding principles and ideals, will be entrepreneurial, and have the ability to work independently. The candidate should also demonstrate:
- A minimum of 4 years’ experience in fundraising or sales, preferably with direct donor or customer interaction (major gifts solicitation experience preferred).
- A four-year undergraduate degree.
- A high-level of interpersonal and relationship-building skills.
- Strong written and verbal communications skills.
- The willingness to travel for donor meetings and networking events.
- A belief in the mission of the JMC and the ability to articulate that mission to donors.
