Luke Mayville to Speak at American U’s Political Theory Institute

For its final event of 2014, the Political Theory Institute at American University presents Luke Mayville on “Wealth, Birth, and Beauty in the Writings of John Adams.”

Dr. Mayville holds a Phd from Yale University and a BA summa cum laude from the University of Oregon. His dissertation, entitled “The Oligarchic Mind: Wealth and Power in the Political Thought of John Adams,” draws upon John Adams’s treatises, essays, and letters to uncover an unfamiliar theory of the political power of wealth. His article, “Fear of the Few: John Adams and the Power Elite,” is forthcoming in Polity. He is the 2014-2015 Postdoctoral Fellow at the Political Theory Institute at American University.

Note: the parking situation has changed. The parking lot bounded by Nebraska, New Mexico, and Massachusetts Avenues, where I previously recommended parking, is under construction and no longer available for parking.

New Parking Directions: There are two possibilities: 1) Park in the underground lot of the Katzen Arts Center, the entrance of which is at the light on Massachusetts Ave immediately north of Ward Circle; 2) enter AU main campus from the Massachusetts Ave entrance. Go through a few stop signs and the road will dip down taking you under a building. At the stop sign at the end of the overhang, make a sharp U-turn to the right which will take you into an indoor parking lot. Both of these lots are free after 5:00 p.m.
