On this day – Pennsylvania became our Second State

December 12, 2022

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every year that begins at 12:00 am on day 12 of December, repeating indefinitely

On December 12, 1787, Pennsylvania ratified the Constitution, making it our second state. The state has hosted many historical events, perhaps most notably the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitutional Convention.

Philadelphia (home of the Jack Miller Center!) also served as the meeting place for the First Continental Congress in 1774. Pennsylvania’s nickname of “Keystone State” refers to its essential role during the Founding Era.

What’s in a name? “Pennsylvania” comes from a combination of the name Penn (from the colony’s founder, William Penn) and the Latin word for woods. It is the only state whose name comes from a colonial founder.
