James Madison - John VanderlynOn this day in 1751, 4th president and founding father James Madison was born in Port Conway, Virginia.

Madison was instrumental in the creation of the Constitution, earning the title “father of the Constitution.” He publicly defended the new form of government, writing some of the most-studied Federalist Papers, and was responsible for compiling the Bill of Rights. As president, much of his time in office was consumed with foreign affairs, namely the War of 1812.

Did you know? Madison wasn’t the conventional picture of a leader – slight, quiet, and plagued with health issues, he was once described as “the most unsociable creature in existence.”

An inspiration to introverts, he quickly rose to the top in intellectual pursuits, completing his studies at Princeton in two years and becoming the youngest member of the 1780 Continental Congress at age 29. And, despite his reserved demeanor, he beat the booming Patrick Henry in debate, quietly and successfully rebutting each of his opponent’s antifederalist arguments and winning Virginia over to constitutional ratification.
