On March 20, 1612, Puritan poet Anne Bradstreet was born in Northampton, England. A leading figure in early American poetry, Bradstreet was the first published poet from the American colonies. Her poetry was lauded in both America and England, and King George III himself was said to keep a volume in his library.

A reflection of her time and place, Bradstreet’s poems often focused on questions of death, immortality, and conflict between the earthly and the spiritual.

Did you know? Bradstreet was very committed to her writing, producing much of her work in the same time in which she was running a household of eight children.
