On this day – North Carolina became our 12th State

November 21, 2022

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every year that begins at 12:00 am on day 21 of November, repeating indefinitely

On November 21, 1789, North Carolina ratified the Constitution, becoming our 12th state. The state offers a variety of landscapes, encompassing sub ranges of the Appalachian Mountains, swampland, and Atlantic coastline.

Did you know? The first successful airplane flight took place in North Carolina at the windy dunes of Kitty Hawk. There, the Wright Brothers completed a 12 second flight in 1903. North Carolina and Ohio both claim notoriety for the event, with North Carolina being “First in Flight” and the Wright Brothers’ home state of Ohio being the “Birthplace of Aviation.”

The Outer Banks might be a tourist destination, but it’s also deadly to ships. “The Graveyard of the Atlantic” has claimed 1000+ of vessels since the 1500s.

What’s in a name? Like its neighbor South Carolina, North Carolina was named after the English king, Charles II. Early settlers received the land grant during his reign.
