National Waffle Day!

August 24, 2022

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every year that begins at 12:00 am on day 24 of August, repeating indefinitely

August 24 is National Waffle Day! πŸ§‡πŸ§‡πŸ§‡

Did you know that Americans have been enjoying waffles for some 400 years? Dutch Americans in New Amsterdam (later New York) and the Mid-Atlantic brought waffles with them from Europe.

Thought they have European roots, Americans have made waffles distinctly our own – both maple syrup (a North American discovery) and fried chicken were first paired with waffles in America. πŸ—πŸ§‡πŸ―

Waffles are formed using some sort of iron – in colonial days, this often consisted of a hinged cast-iron device that could be used over an open fire. It wasn’t until August 24, 1869 that the first patent for a stovetop waffle iron was issued in Troy, New York.
