An event every year that begins at 12:00 am on day 14 of June, repeating indefinitely
Happy Flag Day! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Today marks the 246th anniversary of the adoption of the American flag. First celebrated locally in northern states during the Civil War, June 14th wasn’t officially established as Flag Day until President Woodrow Wilson made a proclamation in 1916. Although not an official federal holiday, Flag Day is an official state holiday in JMC’s home state of Pennsylvania.
Did you know? The current iteration of the flag (with 50stars and 13 stripes) was designed by 17-year-old high school student, Robert G. Heft, who created it for a class project.
Undeterred by a grade of B- for the project (!), Heft submitted the design for President Eisenhower’s review, and it was chosen out of more than 1,500 submitted entries.
Aside from having the honor of being our 27th flag’s designer, Heft’s grade was changed from a B- to an A.
