An event every year that begins at 12:00 am on day 27 of April, repeating indefinitely

On this day in 1822, 18th president Ulysses S. Grant was born in Point Pleasant, Ohio. Although he served a full two terms as president, he is often best remembered for his crucial role in winning the Civil War.

Did you know? President and Mrs. Grant almost attended Ford’s Theatre with Lincoln on the night of his assassination. Though he would have been a target for assassination as well, Grant deeply regretted being absent and felt he may have been able to save Lincoln. He wept openly at Lincoln’s funeral – the two men respected each other greatly.

Grant was also friends with American author Mark Twain. Twain worked with the former president to publish his memoirs. Nearing the end of his life, Grant had money troubles and worried about his family’s future stability. Twain generously offered him 70% of publishing royalties. Despite exhaustion and pain from throat cancer, Grant finished the memoirs a few days after his death. The book was a hit, and, as hoped for, effectively saved his family from financial ruin.
