Through the American Political Tradition Project, the Jack Miller Center leverages its nationwide network of 1,100 scholars to drive innovative reforms in higher education and to grow the movement for civic education at every level.

We are building talent pipelines for scholars who teach the American political tradition, creating a leadership support infrastructure for emerging schools of civic thought in public universities, empowering K-12 social studies teachers through innovative professional development and graduate education, and forging coalitions of civics-focused organizations and funders to galvanize an enduring civic education movement.

Position Overview

Passion for the JMC mission and the ability to write concise, persuasive arguments are essential to this position. You will join a highly engaged group of colleagues working to solve the crisis of uninformed citizenship through education in the American political tradition.

In partnership with our development and academic teams, you will produce compelling proposals and reports and ensure our foundation and corporate donors are kept informed. You will be a central resource for understanding the mission of various foundations and that our requests align with their interests.

Seasoned writers with additional interest in public relations have the option for a broader Senior Writer position, which includes opportunity to produce op-eds, articles, and other publications on behalf of the Jack Miller Center.

The Senior Grantwriter will report to the Director of Development.

Responsibilities

Grantwriting (primary function)

  • Coordinate the grant proposal production process from the program development stage to submission and subsequent reporting
  • Write compelling letters of inquiry, executive summaries, and grant proposals
  • Write and edit reports and updates for corporate, foundation, and individual donors
  • Manage and adhere to the grant reporting schedule according to specifications of foundation and corporate donors
  • Keep abreast of JMC’s funding needs and research foundations that may be interested
  • Organizational Writing (secondary)

  • Write and/or edit board reports and documents
  • Write and/or edit pieces for key organizational documents, such as the annual report, newsletter, and other donor publications
  • Write copy for the JMC website
  • Public Relations (option for a seasoned writer with PR interests)

  • Produce essays and public cases for support
  • Draft op-eds for JMC leaders and board members
  • Participate in developing public relations strategies to reach new audiences
  • Knowledge and Skills:

  • Superior written communication skills and talent for crafting persuasive arguments
  • Ability to gauge the interests and points of view of varied audiences
  • Strong organizational skills: attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines
  • Strong project management skills: ability to track multiple projects, keep team members involved in the writing process on schedule, follow up regularly to ensure deadlines are met
  • Working knowledge of the Microsoft Suite with emphasis on Word and Excel, including the ability to build an attractive basic Excel budget for proposals
  • Knowledge and familiarity with nonprofit development and communications
  • Familiarity with academia preferred, particularly the fields of political science and history
  • Experience with CRM systems a plus, particularly Salesforce
  • Qualifications:

  • Passion for the JMC mission and the ability to articulate that mission in relatable terms for the intended audience
  • Minimum of two years of experience with grant writing, foundation relations, public relations, and/or corporate or nonprofit communications
  • Background in American history and American political thought
  • The willingness to travel on occasion for JMC events and meetings
  • Experience working under deadlines
  • Ability to work well in a team oriented, collegial environment
